Oakridge Kennels is well established as a retriever sport training and all breed boarding facility. We are located in Monroe, North Carolina - convenient to both the Charlotte and Concord areas.

We specialize in retrieving breeds and train gun dogs for the serious waterfowl and upland bird hunter. Terry Price, has over 25 years of experience working with dogs and is an avid outdoorsman and hunter. Along with our facilities and on site training grounds, we have access to over 2,000 acres of private training areas.

Oakridge Kennels participates in competitive retriever sports, including AKC and HRC hunt test events. We conduct numerous training seminars in North Carolina and New York and participate in many trade shows such as The Fly and Wing Show, Southeastern Wildlife Expo and Virginia Outdoor Sportsman's Show.

Our training program is available to all levels and life stages of retrievers - from our Puppy Head Start Program through Finished/Master/Grand level skills that any hunter would be proud to own.

Meet the Trainer, Terry Price
A native North Carolinian, Terry has grown up around hunting and the outdoors since childhood. As a mechanical engineer by trade, he has worked with and designed products for biomedical, fire service, and industrial markets, and has specialized in products for the military, law enforcement, SWAT teams, and NBC protection.

Terry is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys both waterfowl and big game hunting. He has over 25 years of dog experience and has focused on retrievers for the past 20 years. He began accepting retrievers from clients in 1994, training them as gun dogs and hunt test competitors. He is the only trainer in North Carolina that has competed in all three major hunt test organizations (AKC, UKC, and NAHRA) and has successfully titled multiple dogs in all three programs and has qualified dogs for the AKC Master National and the HRC Grand.

Our Training Program
Our training program covers the spectrum of the retriever: from Puppy Head Start, Basic Gun Dog Training, Advanced Gun Dog Training, and Hunt Test Training and Competition.

All of our programs begin with a solid understanding of obedience, which is the basis for all future training your companion will be exposed to while here at Oakridge. Dogs are accepted at 6-8 months of age to begin developing the tools and skills they will need to become a hunting companion or hunt test competitor. We offer a wide variety of fields and ponds to expose your dog to the situations they will encounter while hunting or competing at a hunt test.

We participate in both AKC and UKC Hunt Test programs throughout the southeast. We run a full schedule of events during both the spring and fall seasons.

Visit our Training Gallery to view images of Terry and some of Oakridge Retrievers "at work".

Our Training Facilities
Along with our own well groomed grounds, we have access to over 2,000 acres of training areas that encompass a vast array of different hunting scenarios. This affords your hunting retreiver all the terrains needed to learn and rehearse concepts and skills at all levels.

Our kennels are climate controlled 4x6 inside runs, 4x8 outside runs complete with Kuranda dog beds in each run. We feed Purina brand foods.

Oakridge North
Each year from June to late August we travel to upstate New York with all the retrievers from Oakridge for summer training. This allows us to train all day in cooler temperatures, and avoid the very hot summer months typically experienced here in North Carolina.

The training areas host a variety of land concepts with mowed strips of cover, and adjacent fields for training include both hay and alfalfa fields, 3 semi-technical ponds, 1 marsh pond, 4 acres of flooded timber, and another huge flooded timber area in the woods (thanks to the beavers). There is also a huge pattern field and a double swim-by pond on site, as well as other properties nearby.

Visit our Facilities Gallery to view images of our Kennels and Training Grounds.

Thanks to Ernie and Carol we are able to reside and train on well over 300 acres of various grounds in the Mexico/Oswego area. The grounds and ponds were developed with one purpose in mind: the training of retrievers.

Carol is a very serious hunt test amateur and she breeds and raises some very nice field Golden Retrievers. Her breeding’s have produced pups that have titled in WC/X, AKC, HRC hunt test and AKC field trials.  For information about Carol and the fine Golden Retrievers she raises, please visit her website @ adirondac-goldens.com
